Garni, Geghard & the Symphony of Stones

A temple above the gorge, basalt below it, a monastery inside the rock — then lavash by hand.

Die Geschichte der Route

A half-day where stone keeps changing authors.

Garni disciplines stone into columns above the gorge. Below it, lava has made columns of its own. Farther up the valley, Geghard reverses the relationship again: the mountain becomes the architecture. The day ends back in the village, where stone gives way to clay, fire and bread.

Der Ablauf des Tages

The stops run down one valley: a view, a temple on the spur, a walk into the gorge, a monastery in the rock, and bread in the village. One of the five happens only if the sky is clear.

Three of the five stops are the same place — the temple, the gorge below it and Garni village cluster closely together. Geghard is the one meaningful drive, farther up the valley.

Every stop sits within about forty kilometres of Yerevan, in one pocket of the Azat valley. That is why it is a half day and why it works as a first one.

  1. 01 / 05

    Stone frames.

The day begins with a frame, not a monument.

A roadside arch framing Ararat across the valley, named for the poet Yeghishe Charents. A brief stop, and clear weather only — on a clear day you can count the mountain’s two peaks.

Roadside, no walking. Skipped in haze rather than shown in haze.

ACHTEN SIE AUFArarat’s two peaks, framed by the arch — count them.

  2. 02 / 05

    Stone is built.

Classical geometry set against a wild gorge.

A colonnaded temple of the classical world on a spur above the Azat gorge — put back together in the 1970s from its own fallen stones. Walk past the temple to the edge of the spur, where the gorge opens below.

Level ground on the spur with a few steps, and no shade at the temple itself.

ACHTEN SIE AUFWalk round the colonnade, then look down from the edge of the spur.

The track downZU FUSS

Off the spur and into the Azat gorge. Most visitors see the columns from the rim; this day walks in under them.

  1. 03 / 05

    Stone grows.

Nobody designed these columns. Cooling lava did.

Down into the Azat gorge to the basalt columns, hanging from the cliff in tight hexagonal bunches with the river underneath. Most visitors photograph this from the rim. The scale only registers with a person standing under them.

Getting down into the gorge is the rough part; at the columns the path is paved and level. The climb is on the way back out — the one stop that asks something of you, and the reason to wear shoes you can climb in.

ACHTEN SIE AUFStand under the columns, not at the rim.

  2. 04 / 05

    Stone is entered.

The building stops sitting on the landscape and begins disappearing into it.

A monastery half cut into the cliff, its inner chambers carved from solid rock. The point is the room: stone that carries a single voice further than you expect.

Modest dress is expected inside. Stone floors, worn smooth and uneven, and the rock-cut chambers are dim after the courtyard.

ACHTEN SIE AUFIn a rock-cut chamber, hum one note and listen.

Geghard from above: the church and walled courtyard set hard against the cliff, with rock-cut openings in the rock face behind.
Inside Geghard: dark stone columns and carved arches, with light falling through narrow windows onto the floor
  3. 05 / 05

Stone gives way to clay and fire.

After monuments and cliffs, the final thing made by hand is something you eat.

Dough rolled thin on a wooden board, slapped onto the wall of a clay tonir, and eaten a minute later — in Garni village, where the day comes back down. You do the rolling. It belongs to the day as Safar designed it; the host is confirmed with your request.

Lavash-making is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list.

    Indoors and seated. No walking.

ACHTEN SIE AUFYour turn at the board.

Bevor Sie sich entscheiden

Ist dieser Tag etwas für Sie?

Ideal für

  • A first visit to Armenia
  • Half a day rather than a whole one
  • Travellers who want to understand Armenian stone in one short day
  • Photographers who want landscape scale as much as monuments

Überlegen Sie es sich zweimal, wenn

  • Uneven ground and a climb back out of the gorge are not for you. The Symphony of Stones is reached on foot, and the day works without it; Geghard does not ask the same of you.
  • You want a quiet visit to Garni. The temple is small and it is the best-known stop in the region.
  • Ararat matters most to you. The Arch of Charents is shown only on a clear day and skipped in haze, so the mountain is not guaranteed.

Für den Tag merken

Three words worth knowing

  1. Cross-stonekhachkarA carved stone cross-slab, particular to Armenia. You will see them at Geghard, and at almost every church after it.
  2. Church hallgavitThe hall in front of an Armenian church, where people gathered before going in.
  3. Clay oventonirThe clay oven sunk into the floor, used across the region. In Garni village it is where the lavash is baked.

WHY THIS DAY IS ON SAFAR

Most itineraries combine Garni, the gorge and Geghard because they are close together. Safar keeps them together for a different reason: each changes how you read the one before it. A classical temple makes the basalt below feel stranger; the basalt makes Geghard’s carved chambers feel less impossible. Bread in the village brings the day back from monuments to something still being made. That progression is why this is one of the first days we would choose in Armenia.

Wo dieser Tag in eine Reise passt

Do it first. It is the closest of these days to Yerevan and the shortest.

Then change register rather than repeating it. North over the pass to Dilijan and Lake Sevan is forest and water. South to Areni is red rock and a long lunch. Tatev deserves a day with nothing else in it — most of that day is road.
